SAVILE WAS “CLASSIC CHILD ABUSER”

This is the fourth installment of Bill Donohue’s report on the BBC sexual abuse scandal and its implications for the New York Times:

Here is what MailOnline said last week about the victims of the late BBC entertainer Jimmy Savile: “The picture they paint is of a ‘classic’ child abuser, targeting vulnerable youngsters at schools, hospitals and children’s homes….He plied them with treats—under the noses of teachers, doctors and BBC managers—and took them for rides in his Rolls-Royce….Savile sexually abused them in his car, his BBC dressing room, on hospital wards and in the bedrooms of girls at Duncroft boarding school in Surrey.” Former BBC chief Mark Thompson, who will soon head the New York Times Company, says it’s all news to him.

Some of those who got to know Savile the best saw him as a Michael Jackson-type predator. Janet Cope worked for him for 32 years and here is how she describes him today: “He was like Peter Pan, forever surrounding himself with youngsters.” Acting like the “classic child abuser” that he was, Savile sought out the most vulnerable young people to exploit. For example, just this week, a disabled female actress, Julie Fernandez, confessed that she was groped by him when she was 14.

The more dysfunctional the youngster, the more attractive they were to Savile. Two days ago it was reported that he preyed on kids at an institution for emotionally disturbed girls; at least five former pupils from Duncroft have come forth to tell what happened. As one of them said, “Jimmy treated Duncroft like a paedophile sweet shop.” So why didn’t they report him? “The girls at Duncroft had been sent there by the courts for prostitution, drugs and because they tried to kill themselves,” Toni Townsend said. “Who would have believed us against Saint Jimmy?”

Savile’s predatory behavior extends back decades. English folk legend Meic Stevens revealed this week that in the 1960s, “It was well known in the music business that he [Savile] was like that, that he liked to mess around with underage girls.” Savile was also generous with his victims: Stevens was offered underage girls to abuse in the back seat of his Rolls-Royce. More to come next week

THE MAN BEHIND BBC/NYT NIGHTMARE

This is the second installment of Bill Donohue’s report on the BBC sexual abuse scandal and its implications for the New York Times:

When BBC icon Jimmy Savile died on October 29, 2011, he was mourned by the BBC faithful. Mark Thompson, the BBC’s general director and now president/CEO-elect of the New York Times Company, said he was “very sad” to hear of his death. But many of those who recently grieved would now like to strangle Savile: senior BBC figure Jeremy Vine said this week that Savile is “one of the most serious predatory paedophiles in criminal history—and he was on our doorstep.”

The flamboyant, cigar-chomping, big-time charitable fundraiser was, in the words of New York Times columnist Bill Keller, “a combination of Dick Clark of ‘American Bandstand’ and Jerry Lewis, maestro of the muscular dystrophy telethon.” This is true but incomplete: add Liberace, Michael Jackson and Pee-wee Herman to the mix, and the portrait is complete.

Savile was Britain’s first DJ. He was also a TV host, miner, wrestler, dancehall manager, cyclist, marathon runner, book reviewer, Mensa member, and a child rapist. His most popular gig was hosting “Top of the Pops,” the legendary U.K. music show. His own program, “Jim’ll Fix It,” lasted almost 20 years; it allowed him to make promises to kids which he tried to fulfill. Unfortunately, for a lot of these kids, Jimmy fixed them alright—they were used to fulfill his own sick needs. He was a switch-hitting, AC/DC, equal opportunity molester who preyed on boys as well as girls (he favored girls), both pre-pubescent and post-pubescent.

Everyone knew Sir Jimmy was bizarre, the kind of happy crackpot that was charming, if not engaging. Many suspected he was a pervert, but no one—not a single person over six decades—did anything about it. The question on the table is whether Mark Thompson had anything to do with nixing an investigation into Savile’s sordid behavior. More tomorrow.

BLACK CLOUD OVER INCOMING NEW YORK TIMES CEO

Bill Donohue comments as follows:

Mark Thompson is slated to start next month as the new president and CEO of the New York Times Company. He comes in under a cloud of suspicion. Almost a year ago, a decision was made at the BBC to kill a “Newsnight” investigation into what is now becoming the most astonishing sexual abuse scandal in the history of the United Kingdom: Thompson was the director general at the BBC from 2004 to 2012, and serious questions have been raised about his role in squashing the investigation. He denies wrongdoing. The person of interest is suspected child rapist and serial predator Jimmy Savile, a celebrity icon who worked at the BBC for more than 25 years. His predatory behavior extends back six decades, and some of his sexual abuse took place on the premises of the BBC.

I have personally collected a great deal of information on this subject and will have much more to say about my findings. My interest is twofold: both the BBC and the New York Times have been among the harshest critics of the homosexual scandal that took place more than a quarter century ago in the Catholic Church. Let’s see how they react to a little “sunshine,” as they like to call it. I’m just beaming.

We know the BBC is already in deep trouble over this issue—two internal investigations are under way—but it cannot be trusted to report on itself. Indeed, contradictory accounts have already been offered, involving what Thompson knew and when he knew it. British Culture Secretary Maria Miller has called off an independent inquiry, but she may not have the last word. We support British Labor chief Ed Miliband’s call for a probe.

Bill Keller got out in front of this issue by writing a piece for the New York Times on its website; it appeared over the weekend, and it is reprinted today in the Times-owned International Herald Tribune. But why hasn’t his article been printed in the op-ed page of the Times?

Stay tuned. You won’t be bored.

WHY WARREN BUFFETT IS ANTI-CATHOLIC

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on an aspect of Warren Buffett’s finances not ordinarily discussed:

Warren Buffett’s comment that the rich should pay higher taxes, now enshrined by President Barack Obama as the “Buffett Rule,” is drawing much applause. What is not being discussed is the billionaire’s support for anti-Catholicism. First some background information.

Over several decades, Buffett has spent a fortune funding radical abortion organizations like NARAL and Planned Parenthood; he has lavishly given money to train a new generation of abortion physicians; he has spent millions to help RU-486 (the abortion-inducing drug) to win FDA approval; and he gave his pro-abortion, population-control friends at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation nearly $31 billion in 2006 for more of the same. There’s nothing anti-Catholic about any of this, but when he intentionally seeks to subvert Catholicism by dishonestly funding pro-abortion organizations that have hijacked the Catholic name, that’s another story.

To be specific, Buffett has given hundreds of millions over the years to anti-Catholic front groups like Catholics for Choice (formerly Catholics for a Free Choice) and its sister organization in Latin America, Catholics for the Right to Decide. In 2010, the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation alone gave $759,822 to the former, and almost $1.7 million to the latter. These letter-head organizations wouldn’t exist if they depended on donations from members—they don’t have any—they exist because of the likes of Warren Buffett.

If Buffett, or someone like him, were to throw millions upon millions funding Jews for Jesus, what would the Jewish community call him? Now you know why Warren Buffett has earned the tag anti-Catholic.

CATHOLIC REPORTER UNJUSTLY FIRED IN MAINE

Catholic League president Bill Donohue explains why the Catholic League is defending Larry Grard:

For almost two decades, Larry Grard worked as a reporter at Maine’s Morning Sentinel. He was recently fired because he e-mailed a letter (using his own e-mail account) to the head of an advocacy organization that his boss, Bill Thompson, did not like.

To be specific, Grard, who is Catholic, was unhappy with the angry comments made by Trevor Thomas of the Human Rights Campaign following last month’s election results. Having just lost in his bid to secure gay marriage in Maine, Thomas blamed hatred of gays for the loss. Grard wrote back, blaming Thomas’ side for generating hate. That was it.

Interestingly, Grard’s wife, Lisa, who writes a bimonthly cooking column for the newspaper, was subsequently fired. It was suddenly decided that her work was “no longer a good fit.” Sounds like reprisal to us.

As a Catholic, Grard has a right to hold, express and defend the teachings of the Catholic Church with impunity. While the First Amendment does not apply to private organizations, the fact remains that if Grard can be fired for something like this, then the rights of all reporters are in jeopardy. This explains why the Portland Newspaper Guild is standing squarely behind him. So is the Catholic League. We have put Grard, and his wife, in contact with law firms that may want to sue Mr. Thompson and his newspaper.

“OPIE AND ANTHONY” A YEAR LATER: CATHOLIC LEAGUE HAS THE LAST LAUGH

On August 15, 2002, a Virginia couple had sex in New York’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral in front of men, women and children on a holy day of obligation for Catholics.  It was part of a contest arranged by radio talk-show hosts “Opie and Anthony.”  A detailed description of the sexual encounter was broadcast by a WNEW staffer over the air.

Without delay, Catholic League president William Donohue called upon WNEW to fire the duo.  He also asked the FCC to pull WNEW’s license; Donohue rescinded his request once the radio hosts were terminated.  Here is what Donohue said of the incident today:

“A year after ‘Opie and Anthony’ were fired, some are saying the Catholic League is still gloating.  This is true.  We are.  Moreover, despite receiving a record amount of the most vicious, obscene, anti-Catholic letters and phone calls, it was worth it.  The punks are history.

“Listen to what the media experts said last year in the wake of the firing.  ‘They’ll be back’ is how Gregory Kane of the Baltimore Sun put it.  ‘They’ll be back on the air, because they get ratings’ was how a Chicago Tribune editorial put it.  Adam Jacobson of Radio and Records said, ‘the sicko shock jocks will be heard from again on the radio because sleaze sells.’  The Boston Herald quoted an anonymous media insider as saying, ‘I think they’ll be suspended for about a week.’  Media consultant Walter Sabo warned, ‘You can’t write them off because the ratings they were getting were extraordinary.’  Robert Thompson, a media professor at Syracuse University, opined, ‘Wanna bet some station somewhere is already salivating at the prospect of signing the team?’  And Boston University professor of communications Tobe Berkovitz predicted, ‘the two will bounce back to get hired at another major-market station….’

“To their credit, most of the experts were not fans of the shock jocks.  As for us, we got the last laugh.  This is one culture war our side won.”

NYC COMPTROLLER WILLIAM C. THOMPSON PROVIDES LINK TO PORN SITES

Catholic League president William Donohue objected today to the use of taxpayer money to fund porn sites that are linked to the website of New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson:

“On the homepage of New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson’s website, there is a link to the Lesbian, Gay, Transgender Directory of Services and Resources.  Most of the listings on the 120-page document are unobjectionable, but there are some sites that are morally repulsive, as well as anti-Catholic.

“Listed in the directory is The Closet Case Show on the Web.  Accessed at rickx.com, the site is replete with hard-core gay pornography.  By clicking on gaywired.com, another listing, users are treated to ‘The Incredible Hung Hulk,’ a 12-inch replica doll; it is not available at Wal-Mart.  On Our Backs Magazine is a lesbian publication that teaches the uninitiated the art of rimming, also known as oral-anal sex (a picture is also provided).  Swell.

“Thompson is aware of this because a recent news article mentioned the first listing.  Also published were the objections of Republican party district leader Evan E. Edwards.  Yet nothing has been done about it.  Interestingly, Thompson’s website also provides a link to an urban terrorist organization, ACTUP.  This was the group that broke into St. Patrick’s Cathedral during Sunday Mass in 1989 and, acting like Nazis, spit the Eucharist on the floor.

“In his introductory remarks to the Directory, Thompson says ‘You’ll find a wide range of community organizations, health care facilities, counseling and support groups, recreational and cultural opportunities, houses of worship….’  Sounds like a Welcome Wagon of old ladies extending their best wishes.

“Thompson is obliged to swiftly remove such objectionable listings from his Directory.  We hope responsible gays agree.”

NEW YORK CITY SUED FOR RELIGIOUS DISCRIMINATION

A lawsuit has been filed by the Thomas More Law Center against the City of New York, Schools Chancellor Joel Klein and another school official challenging the Department of Education’s policy regarding “Holiday Displays”: the policy allows the display of the Jewish Menorah and the Islamic Star and Crescent while banning the Christian religious holiday symbol, the Nativity Scene.  Catholic League president William Donohue helped arrange the lawsuit and issued the following remarks today:

“Last December and January, I wrote several letters to then-Schools Chancellor Harold Levy and Chad Vignola, General Counselor to the Chancellor, protesting the Department of Education’s ‘Holiday Display’ policy.  That policy expressly allows the display of ‘secular holiday symbol decorations’ such as ‘Christmas trees, Menorahs and the Star and Crescent.’  It was this policy that was used to justify the banning of a Nativity Scene.  But it is disingenuous to maintain that the Menorah is not as fully religious in heritage as the Nativity Scene is (the Thomas More brief also asserts the religious nature of the Star and Crescent).

“The disagreement I had with Mr. Vignola on this matter did not result in a lawsuit last year because I did not have time to find a plaintiff that would grant us standing.  But we did find someone early this year, Andrea Skoros, a Catholic League member from Queens.  I then contacted my friend at the Thomas More Law Center in Michigan, Richard Thompson (the Center’s president), to see if he wanted to take the case.  He agreed and put attorney Robert Muise on it.  So when the Catholic League learned this fall that Mr.Vignola was not going to change the ‘Holiday Display’ policy, a decision to file suit was made.

“It is outrageous that New York City public school officials allow some religious symbols in the schools every December while banning others.  Catholics are sick and tired of being discriminated against by bureaucrats who tell us we should be satisfied with a Christmas tree in the schools.  No, we want the real thing—the manger scene—and will not accept a secular substitute.  All we want is parity with Jews and Muslims.”

NEBRASKA LAWMAKERS ASKED TO CENSURE STATE SEN. ERNIE CHAMBERS FOR BIGOTRY

The Catholic League is asking Nebraska lawmakers to censure one of its state senators, Ernie Chambers.  On November 5, in a debate over budget cuts, Chambers went on a tirade over public monies spent on students who attend Catholic schools; scholarships are currently available to poor students who attend private schools, including two Catholic colleges.

Chambers’ complaint, which occurred the day before Nebraska lawmakers decided to cut the program by 3 percent next year, was aimed at the “Catholic hierarchy.”  He accused four fellow lawmakers of an “unholy alliance” with the Catholic Church to protect the scholarship program.  Chambers said the Catholic Church was a “political entity” that was guilty of such past “crimes” as allowing segregated schools and the persecution of Galileo.  State Senator Mike Foley labeled Chambers’ remarks as “vile, hate-filled and bigoted” and fellow colleague Nancy Thompson branded the same comments as “anti-Catholic.”

Catholic League president William Donohue explained the league’s position today:

“We are asking the Nebraska legislature to censure State Senator Ernie Chambers.  The man is a bigot and thus deserves to be reprimanded. Preferably, Chambers should resign.

“As we’ve seen many times before, the issue of Catholic schools acquiring public support typically results in outbursts of Catholic bashing.  It is bad enough when private citizens engage in such bigotry, but it is inexcusable when their representatives do.

“Since the horrors of 9-11, President Bush has rightly asked all Americans to reject hatred toward any group.  It is only fitting, then, that Nebraska lawmakers take this opportunity to censure State Senator Ernie Chambers for mocking the letter and the spirit of this call for tolerance.”

HOUSTON PORN-ART GALLERY OWNER SHEDS BIAS

Earlier this month, a group of Hispanics in Houston, Texas protested what they saw as a blasphemous, obscene and racist exhibit at the Redbud Gallery.  The exhibit in question, “Sextablos: Works on Metal,” is a play on the Spanish word, retablo; retablos are Mexican paintings of saints on sheets of tin.  “Sextablos” features many pornographic images, but by far the worst is the one by Michael Thompson that shows a naked woman performing fellatio on Christ nailed to the cross.  A book of the display is also available from Bad Press Books.  The exhibit extends to January.

Catholic League director of communications Patrick Scully called the owner of the Redbud Gallery, Gus Kopriva, to ask him about the exhibit.  Kopriva agreed that it was offensive to him as a Catholic to show Christ receiving oral sex.  Nonetheless, he said, he didn’t have any choice to show part of the exhibit.  He then defended the piece by saying that “the idea is to shock the mainstream establishment—pure shock.”  When asked if he would show an exhibit that ridiculed the Holocaust, he said, “Oh, yes, I would have to.”  He then offered, “Would I accept an exhibit that espoused the KKK?  No.”

Catholic League president William Donohue offered his remarks on this subject today:

“Everyone has a hot button and now we know what offends Gus Kopriva—he doesn’t want to offend African Americans.  But Catholics and Jews, that’s okay.

“To believe that showing a naked woman performing oral sex on Jesus Christ would shock the mainstream establishment demonstrates how out of touch Kopriva is.  Indeed, had he asked someone in the Clinton administration to arrange for a federal grant from the NEA, he surely would have gotten one.  All he had to do was call an intern for some help.”
