MORE SILLINESS FROM “O’NEALS”

Bill Donohue comments on last night’s episode of “The Real O’Neals”:

This week’s episode had Kenny visiting the First Unitarian church, invited by the vegan mother of a boy he is tutoring. “It’s very open,” she tells Kenny, who is gay. When he arrives—appropriately dressed for church—he sees what she means. It’s a free-for-all, with grunge clothing and a female minister who prays not to God, but “to whom it may concern.”

Jesus is there, too, and he asks Kenny if he’s feeling guilty about going to a Unitarian church. Kenny says no, if his own mother “can’t accept me for who I am, I’m just gonna be with people who can.” Jesus shrugs and says, “Can’t argue with that.”

Ultimately, it’s even too much for Kenny, who later confides to his mom, “It just doesn’t feel right, it isn’t mine.” And so the members of this “typical” Irish Catholic family continue their weekly stumbling existence, totally confused about who they are and what they believe. Of course, on this show, even Jesus can’t seem to figure out who he really is.

ATHEISTS SUE U.S. HOUSE CHAPLAIN

Bill Donohue comments on an atheist group suing the U.S. House chaplain:

Thursday, May 5, was America’s annual National Day of Prayer. So of course the anti-prayer Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) chose that day to sue the chaplain of the U.S. House of Representatives. FFRF president Dan Barker is upset that House chaplain Father Patrick Conroy, a Jesuit priest, has declined to invite him to deliver a non-prayer “invocation” on the House floor. FFRF also named House Speaker Paul Ryan, along with several members of Father Conroy’s staff, in the lawsuit.

Remarkably, Barker invokes his ordination as a Christian minister 41 years ago to justify his request—even though he later renounced God and proclaimed his atheism. Noting that House rules require guest chaplains to submit a valid ordination certificate, FFRF states that “Barker, who was a Christian minister for 19 years, retains a valid ordination, which he still uses to perform weddings.” Really? Do those he marries know that he has renounced the Christian faith for which he was ordained? In short, do they know that the man is a fraud?

Fortunately, the House chaplain sees through this sham. It has been a long-standing requirement, Father Conroy explains, that any guest chaplain must be “ordained by a recognized body in the faith in which he/she practices” (My italics.) “This is a substantive requirement—not a mechanical or check-the-box requirement,” Father Conroy wrote to Barker’s Congressman. “For example, I do not invite member-recommended individuals who have obtained an Internet-generated ordination to serve as guest chaplains, even if they hold deep and long-standing religious beliefs.”

All the more reason not to invite as a guest chaplain someone whose deep and long-standing beliefs are anti-religious. On a day in which President Obama reminded us of the need to “see God in everyone,” FFRF reminded us that they see God in no one.

GANGING UP ON CATHOLIC HOSPITALS

urlBill Donohue comments on a report that is critical of Catholic hospitals:

The ACLU has long waged war on Catholics over the issue of abortion. Now it has joined with Planned Parenthood to author a report that sounds the alarms over the “news” that one in six hospitals in the nation is Catholic-run. The actual organization that teamed up with the ACLU is MergerWatch, an arm of Family Planning Advocates, which, in turn, is funded by New York’s Planned Parenthood. That’s how the Left works.

The ACLU has repeatedly sued Catholic hospitals for allegedly violating the civil liberties of women, and it has repeatedly lost in the courts. As proof, it cites the Church’s opposition to contraception, sterilization and abortion, and various directives issued by the bishops to Catholic hospitals. It continues to lose because the First Amendment guarantees religious liberty, a fundamental expression of which is the right of Catholic entities to maintain institutional autonomy.

The study notes with anguish that since 2001, the number of Catholic-owned or affiliated hospitals has risen by 22 percent. Hopefully, the trend will continue, thus providing a safe home for children who might otherwise be killed in their mother’s womb.

The author of the new study, Lois Uttley, who is also the director of MergerWatch, says that “In general, Catholic hospitals provide excellent care.” Her only regret is that they are Catholic.

It is striking that Uttley can acknowledge the yeoman work of Catholic hospitals, and then defend lawsuits directed at disabling them. Evidently, her support for abortion trumps her interest in the health of those served by Catholic hospitals. This suggests that more than support for abortion is at work—it signifies a lust.

CATHOLIC BASHERS STORM ALBANY

Bill Donohue comments on the scene in Albany today:

Today is the day when those who claim to be concerned about the sexual abuse of minors show up in Albany to lobby for a bill that would lift the statute of limitations on such offenses. Many are genuinely well-meaning, but others are not.

The latter are populated most conspicuously by phonies and mean-spirited activists whose only goal is to stick it to the Catholic Church. SNAP, BishopAccountability, Call to Action, and Catholic Whistleblowers are about as representative of Catholics as the bigots from the Westboro Baptist Church are of Protestants.

These four groups are not really organizations: SNAP has no central office or day-to-day employees, and is headed by a guy who admits to lying to the media; BishopAccountability is nothing but a website, and a dishonest one at that; Call to Action is a rag-tag assembly of dissident Catholics, some of whom have been ex-communicated; and Catholic Whistleblowers could fit all of its members into a phone booth.

Albany lawmakers should give all legitimate activists and lobbyists the respect they deserve. But they are under no obligation to listen to haters.
