CHURCH BASHERS RALLY FOR NUNS

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on the way some pundits are rallying on behalf of nuns:

Anyone who has read New York Times columnists Maureen Dowd and Nicholas Kristof, and the editorials in the Boston Globe (owned by the Times), knows how contemptuous they are of the Catholic Church. There is one exception: they love left-wing dissidents. Hence, their rally for “progressive” nuns.

Yesterday, Dowd sounded like a stand-up comic when she said “the Vatican is trying to muzzle American nuns.” Maybe she should talk to the Sisters of Life and then write a column on how “muzzled” they feel.

Yesterday, Kristof also showed how clueless he is when he wrote about “a stinging reprimand of American nuns.” Perhaps he should speak to Mother M. Assumpta Long of the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist and ask if she’s been reprimanded.

The Boston Globe today says “the pope has rebuked the disobedience of European priests,” and has “set in motion a severe disciplining of American nuns.” Imagine that? The pope rebukes disobedient priests. So what exactly do they do at the Globe when a staff member disobeys the newspaper’s policies? Give him a raise?

Whenever these newspapers fire a reporter, they refuse to comment, saying these are “internal matters.” Indeed, when the Times fired A.M. Rosenthal in 1999, they didn’t want to speak to the press about it. Ten years later they went silent again when they fired Ben Stein. But for some reason, these same people think they have a right to condemn the Catholic Church when it seeks to discipline its flock.

The New York Times and the Boston Globe should emulate the way the Catholic Church publicly deals with miscreant staff.

CATHOLIC PREROGATIVES

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on the right of Catholic institutions to determine their own prerogatives:

If a racist Catholic were disinvited from speaking at the commencement exercises of a Catholic college, the only relevant issue would be why the invitation was extended in the first place. But when a pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage Catholic, Victoria Kennedy (the widow of Sen. Edward Kennedy), was disinvited from giving the commencement address at Anna Maria College, the issue was not why she was invited in the first place—it was the decision to disinvite her. That’s because many liberal Catholics are angered by racism and tolerant of abortion. Worse is the spectacle of non-Catholics like Faithful America petitioning the public to get Worcester Bishop Robert McManus (who properly intervened in this matter) to allow Mrs. Kennedy to speak.

In Fort Wayne, Indiana the issue for busybodies is the termination of a Catholic teacher who violated Church teachings by receiving in vitro fertilization. Some may wonder what is wrong with this procedure. The Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend is very clear: “The process of in vitro fertilization very frequently involves the deliberate destruction of embryos or the freezing of embryos, which the Church holds to be incompatible with the respect owed to human life.” Now anyone is free to disagree, but no one is free to accept a job at a Catholic school and make up his own rules. That is why it is so obnoxious to see Emily Herx, the “victim” teacher, making the rounds on TV trying to gin up public support. She knew when she took her job that as a condition of employment she was expected to serve as a “moral exemplar” as defined by the Catholic Church.

These are only two recent cases where non-Catholics are brazenly interfering with Catholic prerogatives. Every institution, secular as well as religious, has house rules. No one is forced to stay. But it is also true that no one has a right to mutiny.

THE BISHOPS SPEAK FOR THE CHURCH

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on the reaction to Vatican efforts to reform the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR):

Most Catholics identify with their parish, not their diocese; they have even less interest in Church matters beyond the diocesan level. This explains why they are non-plussed by Vatican efforts to reform the LCWR. Some liberal Catholics, as well as liberal non-Catholics, are predictably unhappy with the proceedings, and more than a few show clear signs of a nervous breakdown. What is most perplexing is the way non-Catholics have shoved their way into this internal matter.

Jim Wallis is perhaps the most prominent non-Catholic to stick his nose where it doesn’t belong. The former Marxist-turned-Protestant activist runs an organization and a magazine that is heavily funded by atheist billionaire George Soros. His reaction to the Vatican initiative was striking in one respect: he claims that the bishops do not speak for the Catholic Church. “Quite honestly,” he writes, “do most of us believe, or even most Catholics believe, that the bishops are the only ‘authentic teachers of faith and morals?’”

“In matters of faith and morals, the bishops speak in the name of Christ and the faithful are to accept their teaching and adhere to it with a religious assent.” This is not a statement from the first millennium—it is from a Vatican II document, Lumen Gentium. Now Mr. Wallis, not being a Catholic, is free to disagree with this proclamation. But he looks positively foolish when he suggests that some authority other than the bishops may actually speak for the Catholic Church. More important, it is none of his business how the Church crafts its strictures.

If writers for Sojourners insisted that they, not Jim Wallis, speak for the magazine he founded and edits, they would quickly be set straight. I am delighted to take this opportunity to set him straight.

GEORGETOWN’S CATHOLICITY

Nearly 90 faculty members and priests at Georgetown University have signed a letter criticizing Rep. Paul Ryan’s visit to the campus tomorrow. They say his budget plan represents a “continuing misuse of Catholic teaching” because it allegedly hurts the poor.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on this issue:

In 1999, hard-core pornographer Larry Flynt spoke at Georgetown. There was no letter of protest from the faculty. But the Archdiocese of Washington was not pleased, saying the decision provided “a platform which furthers the degradation of women, immoral behavior and the anti-religious opinions Mr. Flynt represents.” In 2003, 70 faculty members signed a letter protesting a speech by Cardinal Francis Arinze when he defended the traditional family at his commencement address; they were angry that he cited abortion, euthanasia, infanticide, fornication, adultery, divorce, pornography, and homosexuality as negative elements.

In 1997, the Washington Archdiocese publicly criticized Georgetown for refusing to put crucifixes in the classrooms. In 2010, years after the crucifixes were restored, the university hid them, as well as other religious symbols, at the request of the Obama administration; Obama’s advance team did not want the president to speak with Catholic symbols in the background.

Georgetown welcomes pro-abortion clubs on campus. There is “Hoyas for Choice,” and “Georgetown University Law Students for Reproductive Justice” (formerly run by Sandra Fluke). There have been no letters of protest from the faculty about the “misuse of Catholic teaching.”

Georgetown obviously has a curious understanding of what constitutes a “misuse of Catholic teaching.” It’s time they held a campus forum on their identity, inviting representatives from the Washington Archdiocese, alumni, and non-Catholics to participate. They can begin by stating what makes Georgetown University different from George Washington University.

SALLY QUINN’S WAR ON CATHOLICS

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on Sally Quinn’s “On Faith” blog at the Washington Post:

It’s no secret that Sally Quinn (who is not Catholic) has a problem with the Catholic Church (save for soup-kitchen Catholics). But today she outdid herself: Of the three lead stories on her Washington Post blog, three are on Catholicism. One is positive, and two are decidedly negative.

The one positive piece doesn’t count. Why? Because it’s about Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy, a Catholic, who is about to sign into law a bill to outlaw capital punishment. The reason this issue doesn’t count is because it’s all window-dressing: exactly one person has been executed in Connecticut in the past 37 years. Now if Malloy were to outlaw abortion in Connecticut, that would be big news.

Anthony M. Stevens-Arroyo raises the question, “Is the Church Corrupt?” You already know the answer. He ends by saying, “Catholics are loyal enough to Jesus and to each other to prevail against the Gates of Hell that now besmirch the institutional church.” Then they are no longer Catholic. Being Catholic means belonging to, and faithfully participating in, the Catholic Church. Even a fraternity insists on fidelity.

Sally herself contributes the other rap. Entitled, “A Catholic ‘War on Women,’” she begins with this startling insight: “The Roman Catholic Church is a hierarchical institution if there ever was one.” Perhaps she knows of an institution that is flat. And is she not the hierarchical leader of her blog post? Then she accuses the Vatican of “condemning nuns, including those among the 55,000 members of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR).” But the Vatican condemned no one and only 3% of nuns belong to the LCWR. She also says the nuns were punished for supporting ObamaCare. As I pointed out earlier today, this is another sham: the reform initiative began before Obama even became president.

Get it straight: There is not a single media outlet in the nation, or university, that deals so gently with dissent as does the Catholic Church.
