GERMAN LAY CATHOLIC GROUPS CONTACTED; MOTHER TERESA CAMPAIGN CONTINUES

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on Day 28 of the protest campaign on behalf of Mother Teresa:

Today I am writing to every German lay Catholic group in the New York Tri-State area informing them of our protest demonstration on August 26 outside the Empire State Building on 34th Street and 5th Avenue.

The rally is being held to protest the decision by Anthony Malkin, the owner of the storied building, to deny a tribute to Mother Teresa: our request to have the towers shine blue and white, the colors of her congregation, on August 26th, the 100th anniversary of her birthday, was originally denied without explanation, and was later denied on appeal by invoking a “policy” that prohibits honoring religious individuals or institutions. If this were in fact true, then (a) they would have said so from the beginning (instead they told me the application looked fine), and (b) they would not have honored Cardinal O’Connor when he died; Pope John Paul II when he died; the Salvation Army; and Rev. Martin Luther King.

Yet the same persons who chose to stiff Mother Teresa decided to honor the Chinese Communist revolution last year, even though 77 million innocent men, women and children were murdered under Mao Zedong. By contrast, the U.S. Postal Service is honoring Mother Teresa with a commemorative stamp.

Everyone is being asked to pass the word about our demonstration and to join us on August 26. They are also being asked to write to Anthony Malkin. His address is Malkin Properties, One Grand Central Place 60, E. 42nd St., NY, NY 10165.

LOUIS C.K.: POPE RAPES BOYS

On last night’s Comedy Central program, “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” comedian Louis C.K. concluded his interview by noting there were certain words that he could not utter on his new show on FX. After offering a few examples, he bleated out the following: “I was going to say that the pope f**** boys….” [The obscenity was bleeped.]

Here is the response by Catholic League president Bill Donohue:

It is a sign of cultural atrophy that so many of today’s comedians cannot exhibit humor save by insulting someone or using vulgarities. Louis C.K. is a case in point. Absent real talent, he does what comes natural to him—he descends to the gutter for laughter. Now he has decided to accuse Pope Benedict XVI of child rape.

I appreciate debate with adults, but have no interest in debating adolescents. Which is why debating this guy would be a waste of time.

Not surprisingly, this gross offense was carried on a network known for two things: (a) trashing Christians and (b) censoring offenses against Muslims.

AMERICAN ATHEISTS STAND FOR NOTHING

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on recent news releases by American Atheists:

It’s always important for an advocacy organization to advocate something positive, and not simply be positioned against something. American Atheists is a classic example of not getting it right. Everyone knows it is organized to believe in nothing, and while that is a childlike reason for assembly, it is worse to see it pout when groups like the Catholic League are on the march.

The Catholic League wants to honor Mother Teresa by having the Empire State Building light the towers blue and white on August 26. Anthony Malkin, who may also believe in nothing, vetoed our request. Joining him is American Atheists, and a few others associated with nothingness.

Now American Atheists is having a hissy fit over the Catholic League’s objections, joined by many other organizations, over a proposed Comedy Central show, “J.C.”, that promises to mock Jesus and Christians. Actually, the sponsors of nothing are having more than a hissy fit. Here is how the group’s head honcho, Ed Buckner, puts it: “The religious conservatives like the Catholic League are behaving like Islamic fundamentalists in trying to censor what Americans want to read, see, or say about religion.” Lucky for him this is a lie.

If I had a recommendation about how to go positive, I would offer them one. Not for nothing, it’s not easy to do given that they are proud to stand for nothing.

EMPIRE STATE BLDG. AMENDS APPLICATION

Catholic League president Bill Donohue addresses the changes made by the Empire State Building in its application for lighting the towers:

The current online application for lighting the towers of the Empire State Building says it has “a specific policy against lighting for religious figures, religious organizations, and additional religious holidays.”

This is another sleight of hand being played by Anthony Malkin, the building’s owner. The reader never learns the truth: this policy was recently made up to justify stiffing Mother Teresa.

To see the front page of the current policy, as well as the front page of the application I filled out in February, click here.

Moreover, as recently as last January, the Empire State Building paid tribute to Rev. Martin Luther King. It would be great to learn from Malkin how he explains such duplicity, but since neither he nor his PR people are speaking to the press, we will never know how he would torture the truth, one more time.

MALKIN DIGS HIMSELF A DEEPER HOLE

Catholic League president Bill Donohue responds to a statement released on June 11 by the owner of the Empire State Building, Anthony Malkin:

Malkin says his decision not to honor Mother Teresa is “final and irrevocable.” That’s fine. My decision to hold a street demonstration in front of his building on August 26 is also final and irrevocable. We will make sure that his place in history is secure.

Malkin is now threatening not to light the towers for Hanukkah and Christmas, blaming me for his position. Like the proverbial brat who didn’t get his way and walks away with his ball, Malkin is digging himself a deeper hole by the minute. “The unintended consequences of focusing on religion may drive us to reconsider those traditional lightings we have maintained over the years,” he says. He adds that his decision not to honor Mother Teresa is not a “slight.” In fact, he says, “only Mr. Donohue for his own platform has chosen to make it one.”

Malkin said no to the U.S. Marines in 2008, and said yes to honoring the murderous Chinese Communist regime in 2009. He loves to give his money, via his foundation, to support abortion and euthanasia, and in 2010 turned down Mother Teresa. The picture that is emerging is not a pretty sight.

Let him dim the lights on Hanukkah and Christmas—it’s what he really wanted to do from the get-go. The more people understand what makes him tick, the better. And if he thinks that I’m the only one taking exception to his decision to stiff Mother Teresa, then let him try taking a stroll down 34th Street on the evening of August 26.
