JON STEWART AND KELLOGG’S

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on two newspaper ads he wrote that were published yesterday and today:

Yesterday, we let the workers at Kellogg’s know what we think of their senior management by taking out a full-page ad in the Kalamazoo Gazette (click here to read it). Today, we let the nation know what we think of Jon Stewart by taking out an op-ed page ad in the New York Times (to read it, click here).

Stewart’s hate speech, and Kellogg’s cavalier reaction to it, deserve to be publicly condemned. There is nothing funny about Stewart’s stunt, and there is nothing commendable about Kellogg’s arrogance. But they didn’t get away scot-free: Their reputations will never be the same.

JON STEWART’S HISTORY OF BIGOTRY

Catholic League president Bill Donohue addresses Jon Stewart’s history of Christian bashing:

Born Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz, Jon Stewart is a self-described “tiny, neurotic man.” He is also a bigot. Here are some of his past attacks on Christianity:

  • In 1999, he mocked the pope when the Holy Father visited the U.S.
  • In 2001, he compared the pope to the Grand Wizard of the KKK
  • In 2002, he questioned whether Mary and Joseph had oral sex
  • In 2007, he made an oral sex joke about a bishop
  • In 2008, he made a gay joke about the Holy Family
  • In 2008, he ridiculed priestly celibacy
  • In 2011, he mocked the Body and Blood of Jesus
  • In 2011, he claimed that a Norwegian madman was acting like a Christian
  • In 2012, he said Our Blessed Mother was “knocked up”

While Stewart’s “vagina manger” assault on April 16 was far and away his most vicious moment, he is no stranger to Christian bashing. Moreover, on more than one occasion he has argued that there really is no difference between Islam and Christianity. Yet he always stays away from offending Muslims. And he not only throws nothing but jabs at Jews, he is hypersensitive over anything that mocks them. In short, he saves his vitriol for Christians.

JON STEWART’S VAGINA MANGER SCENE

On last night’s edition of “The Daily Show,” host Jon Stewart ripped the Fox News Network for not giving air to the “war on women” issue. He then ridiculed the cable station’s “war on Christmas,” asking, “What can women do to generate the same sense of outrage from Fox as the removal of decorative slightly poisonous holiday plants? Perhaps they could play into the theme?”

At this point, they showed on TV a picture of a naked women with her legs spread apart with a nativity scene ornament in between. Stewart said, “Maybe women could protect their reproductive organs from unwanted medical intrusions with vagina mangers.”

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments as follows:

This unprecedented vulgar assault on Christians cannot stand. If Jon Stewart doesn’t apologize, we will mount a boycott of his show’s advertisers. And we will enlist our allies in the Protestant, Jewish, Mormon and Muslim communities.

JON STEWART HOSTS BIGOT

Recently, on the “Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” atheist author Sam Harris said, “The Catholic Church is more concerned about preventing contraception than protecting child rape. It’s more concerned about preventing gay marriage than genocide.”

In his previous book, Letter to a Christian Nation, Sam Harris criticized the Bible for not containing a chapter on mathematics, and for not discussing electricity, DNA or a cure for cancer. Such remarks shine a bright light on his intellectual acumen, but his bigoted rant smacked of the kind of bile we used to expect from the Klan.

We could not help but notice that Stewart, who is ever so sensitive about anti-Semitism, allowed Harris to spew his hate-filled comments without a challenge. Unlike Rick Sanchez, Stewart gets away with this on a regular basis.

This wasn’t light humor, poking fun at Catholicism. This was bigotry, pure and simple.

DELTA DROPS JON STEWART; NO NEW RESPONSE FROM KELLOGG’S

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on the news that Delta has pulled its sponsorship of Jon Stewart’s “The Daily Show”:

I encourage everyone to choose Delta the next time they fly. We need to support advertisers who act responsibly.

I also encourage everyone to continue to pressure Kellogg’s to pivot: they refuse to criticize Jon Stewart for his April 16 “vagina manger” stunt and indeed acted irresponsibly when they offered a lame response to our serious concerns.

Today, all the top management at Kellogg’s will receive a color photo of a naked woman with her legs spread and a nativity scene ornament in between. Let’s see if that jars them. Over 700 photos have been sent to leaders in Battle Creek, Michigan.

Please boycott Kellogg’s cereals.

DELTA DROPS JON STEWART

Within a few weeks of Jon Stewart’s “vagina manger” stunt, Delta Air Lines, one of “The Daily Show’s” biggest sponsors, pulled its advertising from the program. According to a public relations official, Delta claimed, “We just weren’t comfortable with the graphic nature of their image that was used on the show.”

Following this announcement, we encouraged everyone to choose Delta the next time they fly: it is important to support advertisers who act responsibly.

We also encouraged everyone to continue to pressure Kellogg’s to pivot because of their refusal to criticize Stewart for his April 16 assault. Indeed Kellogg’s acted irresponsibly when it offered a lame response to our serious concerns.

Professors take note: The corporate arrogance of Kellogg’s is suitable for classroom discussion in courses on business ethics. Also recommended for discussion is the corporate responsibility of Delta Air Lines.
