In a court filing Friday, the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights called the recent Pennsylvania grand jury investigation into the sexual abuse of children by priests “government-sanctioned religion-based targeting” that “violates the rights of Catholics.”

While acknowledging that child sex abuse should be investigated, the Catholic League claims in its brief that Attorney General Josh Shapiro used the grand jury “as a political weapon to denigrate the Catholic Church.” The brief claims that the grand jury report released Aug. 14 “besmirched” the reputations of scores of clergy, many of them dead, with “unsubstantiated statements.” The league, which defends the rights of Catholics, said it submitted the brief “in support of the Catholic Church and of those lay and religious persons identified in the report who could not defend themselves.” READ MORE HERE
