Chicago Brunch hears Quade, honors oustanding clergyman
More than 200 members and friends of the Catholic League’s Chicago chapter gathered in the Gold Coast room of the elegant Drake Hotel on Sunday, May 2, 1993 following Mass at nearby Holy Name Cathedral for the chapter’s annual brunch and Clergy Recognition Day.
The chapter honored Father William T. Cullen, pastor of Ascension of Our Lord Parish, Overbrook Terrace, as Clergyman of the year.
Father Philip K. Eichner, S.M., Chairman of the Catholic League’s national board of directors introduced Dr. Quentin Quade, Raynor Professor of Political Science at Marquette University and Director of the Father Virgil C. Blum Center for Parental Freedom in Education. A student and later a colleague of Catholic League founder Father Virgil C. Blum, S.J., Quade spoke of Blum as a “believer-citizen,” and challenged League members to live up to that ideal. (The complete text of his address begins on the next page).
At the conclusion of his address, Dr.Quade presented the League’s Catholic Leadership Award to Prof. Frank Brown of DePaul University, a lifelong friend of League founder Father Virgil C. Blum, S.J. and an unflagging leader in the effort to make parental choice in education a reality in Illinois and the nation.
